New iPhone 12 Everything You Need To Know About It

The iPhone 12 is expected to arrive very soon, and as many as three other phones could enter in a first for Apple, rumored to be known as the 12 Max 12 Pro, iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max. As such, there should be more options for IPhones than ever this year, particularly once you have factored into the iPhone SE (2020) launched earlier this year.

Even though we know the iPhone 12 range is coming soon, we don't know exactly when-normally it will be early September, but there are some reports of delays, and even Apple has said the phones will hit stores later than planned (although that doesn't necessarily mean they will ship later). in eager hands before the end of October, and they could well still be revealed in September, so waiting should be near over.

And it's a wait that should be worthwhile because we expect some major improvements, like the first 5 G iPhone. This will make the new phones even more future-proof than the iPhone 11 series of 5 G networks rolling out all over the world. Leaks and rumors also say that the iPhone 12 Pro models will be fitted with a LiDAR scanner, much like the iPad Pro 2020, and we've also heard reports of new screen sizes (starting at 5.4 inches and ending at 6.7 inches).

Cut Back To The Chase:

What is it, then? Apple's New iPhone Generation

When are they out? October possibly-but could be confirmed in September

What does it cost? Expect $649 / GBP 1,200 / AU$1.

News For Latest IPhone 12:

Does any of the 12 iPhone models get a refresh rate of 120Hz? One source says it's impossible, but another has posted a settings screen footage that does indicate a rate like this.

We have also learned more about future Face ID updates, as well as the iPhone 12 Pro Max's potential camera layout and video recording capabilities. In the sections below, you can read all about those future improvements.

When Will The IPhone 12 Come Out/Release Date?

Usually new iPhone models are coming in like a clockwork, but Apple itself has now said that the iPhone 12 series will not go on sale until a few weeks later than usual, which presumably means in October sometime.

Indeed, the new release date leaked is in line with that, as Jon Prosser (a leaker with a mixed track record) said the iPhone 12 range would be released on Week beginning on October 12 (which may mean an announcement on Tuesday, October 13, because on Tuesday, Apple always reveals stuff)

Apparently, pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will then open in the same week-possibly on Friday, October 16, based on the past form from Apple. After that, on the week beginning on October 19 (probably meaning Friday, October 23), the phones apparently will ship.

But obviously the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max will not be up for pre-order or ship until sometime in November. However, we would take these statements with a pinch of salt, particularly as Mark Gurman (a strong track record Apple leaker) replied with a thumb down emoji, indicating that Prosser was incorrect.

Yeah, when are you going to get an iPhone 12? We really can't tell for sure. Apple 's statement isn't clear, and it might just be referring to when the phones go on sale. The majority of the reports seem to point to a one- to two-month wait, so October or November seems possible-though the phones could well be released before that.

How Much Will The IPhone 12 Cost?

The iPhone 12 price is something that leaks have made the release date a little clearer, and from what we hear it's likely to remain largely in line with the iPhone range for 2019.

The iPhone 11 started at $699/ £729 / AU$1,199 for comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro begins at $999/$1,049 / AU$1,749 and the iPhone 11 Pro Max starts at $1,099/$1,149 / AU$1,899 for comparison. There is no precise information about prices for the UK or Australia, but if the above information is correct, we would expect those to fall roughly in line with last year's versions.

That's not to say the phones would cost too much more at launch, particularly because Apple appears to be cutting costs elsewhere, with the battery board reports being much cheaper than on the iPhone 11, and the phones might not be bundled with earbuds or a charging cable, but it may mean a price increase of some sort.

In any case, as our guide states, you probably should wait for the iPhone 12 range to launch before purchasing any new iPhone.

What Will The IPhone 12 Look Like?

The architecture of the iPhone 12 looks expected to be a major change from the smartphone of Apple 's recent few generations. The iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5 remember? Reports say that the design of the iPhone 12 would be partly inspired by those models, and some elements of the iPad Pro 2020 are expected to be mixed in.

Specifically, reliable leaks have indicated that the iPhone 12 would have a more flatter metal frame than the iPhone 11 series, with Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who's a very trusted source, being among those to say this.

We have heard from Jon Prosser that the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max will have aluminum frames and the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Max will have stainless steel frames, and that all four phones will have smaller notches than the iPhone 11 series. All that said, leaked renders which are more recent than most of the above display some major variations in design to earlier leaks, as you can see below.

Also now Sonny Dickson (a leaker with a good track record) has shared with the iPhone 12 range dummy units that seem to be in line with this-as well as this- having flat edges, as speculated above. This can be seen here. That said, other credible sources tend to be skeptical about these leaks, particularly when it comes to the video, so we would take them with a pinch of salt. For now we would say the leaks and information are more likely to be right towards the top of this section.

What Colors Will Come In For The IPhone 12?

As for the 12-color iPhone, we've heard a report that Apple will debut a navy blue on its top-end models. Reports say the Midnight Green color that debuted on the iPhone 11 Pro sold beyond the expectations of Apple, so the company might either decide to retain that or it may be replaced by the navy shade in the lineup.

The iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max came alongside Midnight Green in Space Gray, Silver and Gold. For the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, those shades may remain, but we still have to hear some concrete proof that those colors will return.

We 're expecting a similar pastel set to the iPhone 11 as regards the regular handset. The phone is available in Black, Green , Yellow, Purple, Red and White, so you probably should expect some of those colors to return to the smartphone for 2020.

What Screen Will The IPhone 12 Have?

The biggest improvement to the screen could be the sizes it's available in, as the phones below will be included according to nearly all information:

  • iPhone 12 with a 5.4-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Max with a 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Pro with a 6.1-inch display
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max with a 6.7-inch display

If this is true then we will see for the first time in the form of the iPhone 12 Max, a non-pro 'Max' device. It looks set to have a bigger screen size than the regular iPhone 12, built for people who don't want to spend loads on an iPhone 12 Pro Max model but want a bigger handset.

That said, the size is basically in line with the iPhone 11, but instead of making a larger basic iPhone, Apple has obviously shrunk the regular model, and if that information is accurate then you will have just three sizes to choose from, with the iPhone 12 Max reportedly being the same size as the iPhone 11.

Display Zoom lets you adjust the size of an iPhone's interface to match that of a smaller iPhone device. So the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max, for example, will move to a 5.8-inch display view, making all the icons bigger and more zoomed in. Now, though, there's an option for a 960 x 2079 display that doesn't fit every current iPhone but would make a 5.4-inch model make sense.

Lastly, we have also learned from another source that the two Pro models will use an OLED design that is both thinner and cheaper to manufacture than the displays used in the iPhone 11 Pro series. That might mean lower prices and thinner devices, as well as potentially improved battery life, and it's an argument we've heard about once.

Will The IPhone 12 Camera Be Any Better?

Many of the latest iPhone leaks say that on every device we'll see some major improvements to the camera. The biggest improvement is possibly the inclusion of a LiDAR scanner, just as we have seen on the iPad Pro 2020. This can reliably determine distances and therefore depth, allowing for better augmented reality and style of portrait.

We've heard strong references to the inclusion of a LiDAR scanner on the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max (plus three lenses), while the regular iPhone 12 and It is said that iPhone 12 Max has two camera lenses, and no LiDAR scanner. Multiple reports have made these statements, and the picture below (made by Phone Arena) shows how the camera could look like on the Pro model.

We also saw a leaked drawing (below) on the iPhone 12 Pro apparently showing four rear lenses. This sketch allegedly came from an iOS 14 prototype, and is backed up by lots of other sources.

Three of the lenses on the iPhone 11 Pro look like those, but the new fourth lens looks like the LiDAR scanner on the iPad Pro 2020, much like the render above.

That said, the picture below probably shows a case for the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it doesn't have as many lens holes as we thought, so there are still some questions about camera numbers.

As for the camera's specifications, that's something we're less clear on so far, but one source suggests the iPhone 12 could have a 64MP main camera over the previous models' 12MP snapper which would be a big improvement. This leak also suggests that the phone will have multiple lenses for shooting at night, and that the ultra-wide snapper might have a dedicated macro mode.

Nevertheless, it is worth noting that while Patently Apple, which discovered these patents, clearly ties them to the iPhone 12, there is no guarantee that they will actually make it to the iPhone-or any-other.

What Do We Want To See In The New IPhone 12 Camera?

TechRadar's Cameras editor Mark Wilson says ...

"The iPhone 11 and 11 Pro cameras give us exciting new shooting options but what I want to see on the iPhone 12 is that Apple is ramping up the efficiency on those ultra-wide and telephoto lenses."

They have smaller sensors and slower apertures than the main camera, and they can work in lower light. In all shooting conditions and even a clearer lens with ultra-wide optical image stabilization, it would be great to see Night Mode used.

"I'm also looking forward to seeing Apple take on the concept of a periscope lens we've seen for an optical zoom update from Samsung , Huawei and Oppo, but we may have to wait a little longer." Apart from pure photography, another thing I 'm looking forward to seeing on the iPhone 12 is a LiDAR scanner, like the one on the iPhone 12. one on the iPad Pro 2020, Even though the Apple Glasses haven't arrived for some time yet, some of the next-gen AR experiences listed during WWDC 2020 might give us a ringside seat in ARKit 4 reveal, in particular, that Apple's AR tech is about to be launched. A Lidar scanner might also see photography develop in new ways, as Halide's Esper proof-of-concept application demonstrates."

What Other IPhone 12 Specs Should You Expect?

We are planning to use a 5 nm A14 Bionic chipset for the iPhone 12 series. In this chipset more than once were mentioned. For the average consumer what this means is an iPhone with a greater capability than ever before. The RAM could also benefit by announcing that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max would have 6 GB of content, up from 4 GB of content predecessors-though the regular phone would apparently stick to 4 GB.

This is something that we have learned time and again now, so it may well be real and the iPhone 12 might also support the latest 802.11ay protocol, which would allow content to be transmitted at speeds of at least 20-30Gbps.

One leak can also give us a good picture of the batteries that you can expect from each of the 12 models on the iPhone:

  • iPhone 12 may have a 2,227mAh battery
  • Might have an iPhone 12 Max and an iPhone 12 Pro 2,775mAh battery
  • Might have a 3,687mAh battery on iPhone 12 Pro Max

If that leak is right, there could be no good news for the battery life of the iPhone 12. We can't be sure that these will be the batteries we'll use on the phones coming up, but the cells you can use in the new phones are our best look yet.

Wireless charging is supposed to be included in the iPhone 12-which is no real surprise-and one report indicates that the phone comes with magnets that make it easier to connect with wireless chargers.

The iPhone 12 can use a USB-C? Currently the reports say it would stick to a Lightning cable. Multiple reports have said that there would be no USB-C, with the iPhone 12 presumably sticking to Lightning, and the iPhone 13 possibly going to a portless style.

Will The IPhone 12 Be 5G-Ready?

5 G is expected to make its debut with the iPhone 12 on an Apple phone. In reality, reports say that we're going to see all the models featuring some sort of 5 G connectivity powered by a custom 5 G antenna. Prosser suggested as much in details he 'd obviously heard from an Apple source.

Such models are thought to support mmWave as well as the slower Sub-6 5 G, although the cheaper two variants can only support Sub-6. Not only is that slower, but some carriers like Verizon in the US offer only mmWave, so consumers in that network will have to opt for a pricer model.

A final leak on the issue of 5 G is that both the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Max will come with 4 G options. That's from an unverified source, but it might allow you to get a cheaper device than the 5 G options at the top end.

Will The IPhone 12 Come With AirPods?

The succinct answer to the above question is No. It's quite doubtful that Apple would place a pair of AirPods in the box with a new iPhone because when sold separately, they've become a big money maker for the company.

Apple may plan to unveil the rumored AirPods 3 alongside the new smartphone at its case, but it's strongly rumored the company won't include a pair of earbuds of any kind in the iPhone 12 package-not even cheap ones.

Likewise, we have now found that Apple also doesn't have a power adapter (although you can still get a charging cable). However, this may mean that prices would be reduced. It can also allow for smaller packaging and make shipping lighter and potentially cheaper, although it is not clear how much of that savings will be passed on to consumers.

What Will IOS 14 Bring To The IPhone 12?

The replacement event for Apple's WWDC 2020 saw the company announce its latest iOS 14 software and this is the device we expect to see the company debut on the iPhone 12 later this year. But it'll possibly also come to the new iPhone as several older versions are modified.

iOS 14 will also be debuting "light and easy" versions of some apps that allow you to use certain features without downloading the full app. These are called App Images, and Apple claims they're going to be useful in situations like hiring electric scooters or parking payments.

Even slight enhancements to the Messages app, Apple Maps, Siri and a number of other first-party apps are coming in. There's a lot to be tweaked and while iOS 14 does not add any massive game-changing improvements to the iPhone 12, it's sure to be some of the company's best apps to date.

Do I Need To Purchase An IPhone 11 Or Wait For The 12?

The release date for the iPhone 12 is some time away when you're writing, so whether you need a new iPhone in the next few days, or you should probably consider the iPhone 11 Series.

If you are looking at the iPhone 11 or the higher-spec iPhone 11 Pro or iPhone 11 Pro Max then you need a new top-tier Apple phone now.

What's Next IPhone We Want To See?

The iPhone 11 range was a good upgrade for Apple-but discreet, and thus a bit dull. So, we want to see bigger, more dangerous updates for the iPhone 12, including the following. We wrote some elements we want to see soon after we checked the range of the iPhone 11, so some could fit the leaks we've seen since.

Exciting New Features:

First things first-there needs to be a nice new, glamorous IPhone. Better than expected. We are concerned about stuff we didn't really think of. Stuff we are hoping the best minds of Apple are dreaming up in the company's laboratories at the moment.

That may sound like a very vague order, but Apple is one of the world's largest companies and if any company might make a decent folding smartphone, or one with detachable VR glasses, it's Cook's team.

Since a tweaked design and improved specs are planned, commonplace, and no longer necessary as consumers keep their handsets longer than ever before. Come on Apple, give us a mind-blowing brush.

A New Design:

The thing we want the most from the iPhone 12 is maybe a new design. Since it refreshed the look with the iPhone X, Apple has been rolling out essentially the same concept for years now.

Certainly, certain aspects are being tweaked but the essence is the same. And it is only beginning to look a little old. This is due mainly to the wide notch, which may be appropriate for all the components of the camera required for Face ID, but which we would like to see shrunk or eliminated if possible.

We would just like to see a whole new look at that. The rest of the iPhone 11 Pro 's architecture isn't too mistaken, but at this point it definitely seems too familiar.

An In-Screen Everything:

We would like an all-screen front for the iPhone 12 and one way to do this is to move the front-facing camera under the monitor. If Apple is able to do that successfully, it's sure to impress.

While it's on, we would like Apple to re-add a fingerprint scanner for those moments while Face ID isn't working as slickly as it should. But we also want this on the phone, or better yet, make the whole phone one large fingerprint scanner, as Apple may have been rumored to be planning a future phone.

A Higher Refresh Rate:

One way that businesses can boost their displays further is by increasing the refresh rate from the normal 60Hz. For example the OnePlus 7 Pro has an optional refresh rate of 90Hz, while the Razer Phone 2 is up to 120Hz.

This will help make your smartphone interactions and animations feel silky smooth, so we'd like to see Apple providing a higher refresh rate of its own. Especially because some iPad Pro models have a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, this is not out of question. In reality, exactly that refresh rate for the upcoming iPhones has been reported.

Further Battery Boosts:

It seems like Apple has really prioritized battery life in its phones for the first time in years with the iPhone 11 series but we want the company to go even further with the iPhone 12. Or at least, do not go backwards.

We 're still waiting for an iPhone that can comfortably last two days, and we would like the iPhone 12 (or at least the iPhone 12 Pro Max) to be so.

5G Support:

When it comes to 5 G, Apple is behind since none of the iPhone 11 series provides it, while rival handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S20 family and OnePlus 7 Pro 5 G do.

The good news is that it's widely speculated that the iPhones for 2020 will support 5 G, so that's one thing we'll definitely get.

A Lower Price:

We ask for this each year with new iPhones and this year we actually got it kind of, with the iPhone 11 base starting at less than the iPhone XR did. But it's not really unlikely that we could see an even lower price with the iPhone 12 – or a reduced price for the rest of the line.

We wouldn't count on it, but in recent years, Apple's more inexpensive phones are usually its best-selling, so some motivation should be given to cut costs where possible.
