Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: Everything We Know So Far

Foldable smartphone has received mixed reviews as one of the new fads in the tech market. However, foldable phones are popular, and it looks like more companies want a slice of the pudding. The latest to move in the saga is Xiaomi, said to be working on the competitor to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip.

We have been waiting on a foldable Xiaomi phone for over a year now and there have been rumours and patents that say Xiaomi is actually working on such a device. However, they have been focussing on something different lately. Fortunately, there are still a few talented designers with enough creativity to show us how a foldable Xiaomi flip phone looks. That is the Techconfigurations.

Xiaomi could release a folding smartphone by the end of this year, and according to new reports, the device could look like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. In comparison to the Samsung Galaxy Fold or the Huawei Mate Xs, this means that Xiaomi 's phone would be a clamshell device built to fold up and be easier to bring around than regular large screen smartphones.

The rumour comes from supply chain sources that say Xiaomi has approached Samsung Display to supply it with the necessary displays, ready to start mass production of telephones in the second half of 2020. However, it is not clear if Samsung will be in a position to satisfy the demand.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: What About The Cameras?

Techconfigurations imagined how it would look and work like a so-called Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip.It seems to draw inspiration from both the 2019 Galaxy Z Flip and Moto RAZR, but it takes the specs up a notch and increases the size of the outside frame. Also the Xiaomi Mi Flip is a 5 G smartphone which comes with a revolutionary hinge. I see that at the ends it has some sort of "lids" which is the approach of Motorola, not of Samsung.

It also has plenty of cameras at the back. These include a 108 megapixel main shooter, a 12 megapixel telephoto camera, and an ultra-wide 20 megapixel camera, as well as a 12 MP sensor range, so we've got a quad sensor here. There's also 10x optical hybrid zoom, a major accomplishment for a foldable one. But not sure if it's doable to position them so close to the hinge. Even the main camera, assisted by a large external screen, serves as the selfie camera. It is directly around one third of the wide screen diagonal.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: What About The Battery?

There is an enormous 5500 mAh battery, with 65W fast charging, a Snapdragon 865 processor, 12 or 16 GB RAM (LPDDR5) and up to 512 GB of internal storage among the Techconfigurations specifications. For this novice, too, we see a lot of hues such as bright red , blue, purple and brown.I fear the colours are too bright and the screen is going to light up too much in the morning. Hopefully this is better built than the 2019 Moto RAZR.

Xiaomi 's friendship with Samsung is solid too. In several of its phones, including the Mi 9, and apparently the Mi 10, Samsung AMOLED screen panels were used. It has also produced the 108-megapixel camera sensor used on the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro in collaboration with the company. This certainly would put Xiaomi close to the top of the list when purchasing the folding screen panels.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: What About The Design?

In the supply chain rumour ZDNet article, an official is quoted as saying that the flexible screen production line from Samsung Display is currently adapting to deal with a potential Samsung folding phone. This leaves little room for Xiaomi, even if it comes out with a folding phone, if the deal can be made, there will be limited initial inventories.

Xiaomi has previously been linked to folding smartphones. In January 2019 Xiaomi co-founder Bin Lin saw a working prototype on camera. The handset was an apparatus folding backwards in the same lines as the Huawei Mate Xs. It filed a patent towards the end of the year for a clamshell folding smartphone, and sketches were created around it giving us an idea of what the final product could look like.

If Xiaomi is able to secure the folding screens for Samsung and start mass production after the summer, a release will come before the end of 2020. But development and release plans are changing, particularly given the continuing uncertainty caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: What Price Can We Expect From Xiaomi?

In addition to the price, it is another element to keep in mind. Both Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and the Motorola Razr are on the Indian market priced above Rs. 1.00.000. If Xiaomi can put a lower price bracket into the foldable phone it would definitely win over more viewers.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: What Do We Know About The Display?

Xiaomi is said to be searching for an ultra-thin OLED glass panel lodged under a thin plastic sheet, close to what Samsung used in the Galaxy Z Flip. This flexible display will shape the inner part of the phone and, when unfolded, will act as a normal smartphone.

Xiaomi is said to be working on a foldable phone, like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and the new Motorola Razr, which opens and shuts. It is confirmed that this Xiaomi phone will come with a clamshell-like foldable phone design, and the Chinese giant has said placing an order with Samsung Display for similar foldable displays as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip. The company is also claimed to have LG Display source foldable OLED displays.

By the second half of the year, the company is expected to bring this revolutionary technology onto the production line. And while it's almost likely we will see this foldable phone come out of Xiaomi 's stable sometime later this year or early next year, it's still premature for us to even guess about the phone's possible specifications.

ZDNet Korea notes that Xiaomi put an order for foldable OLED displays with Samsung Display and some displays are also said to be sourced from LG Display. To recall, Samsung Display equipped the Galaxy Z Flip with OLED displays, and they are said to be of better quality than Chinese display makers such as BOE and CSOT did. Motorola, operated by Lenovo, used OLED foldable BOE and CSOT displays on its Motorola Razr (2019). It is confirmed that the OLED display for the upcoming Xiaomi foldable phone will be shipped in the second half of 2020 so don't expect the phone to launch anytime at any time.

Xiaomi filed a patent for her foldable phone in December, and the sketches indicate Galaxy Z Flip-like clamshell style. The Xiaomi phone appears to fold completely in half in these sketches to give a typical flip-like phone look. Once the phone is folded to display notifications a secondary screen can appear at the front. The foldable smartphone also appears to hold an array of sensors with a pop-up selfie camera module. There is no other information about the phone's specifications or timetable for release yet, but we may expect more speculation and possible leaks.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: What Will Be It’s Design?

When it comes to smartphone design, pop-up cameras are another trend many brands have embraced to create a bezel-less screen. Xiaomi reportedly now plans to create a foldable smartphone with a potential pop-up camera to show a bezel less design.

ZDNet Korea sources note that Xiaomi is embracing Samsung's bid to use the ultra-thin glass technology for the first foldable smartphone. The study states that for an upcoming clamshell smartphone, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is turning to their Korean rival in a bid to source flexible displays.

The report goes on to say that Samsung Display is missing supply. That's why Xiaomi is looking to purchase its foldable displays from Chinese companies BOE and CSOT. These are the companies that supplied a similar clamshell design to the display technology for the redesigned Motorola RAZR.

But the report indicated Xiaomi would return to Samsung for its premium content. Looking back, in December 2019, Xiaomi patented the foldable phone concept, and has been playing with the concept for a while now.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: Xiaomi Future Plans

Although Motorola and Samsung already launched the first clamshell foldables in the world in 2020, Xiaomi may not be too far behind. Last year, Xiaomi filed a patent for a flip phone with a foldable display, and rumours say that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is currently working on a Galaxy Z Flip-like style foldable phone – which it might start manufacturing later this year.

ZDNet Korea quoted industry sou
rces saying that Xiaomi plans to go with a clamshell-like foldable OLED display similar to the materials used on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 's phone, unlike the Motorola Razr's entirely plastic panel.

Xiaomi plans to initially source these displays from Chinese companies such as BOE and CSOT which both mass-produce folding screens for Motorola, and then move to Samsung screens, according to the study, due to quality concerns. The report noted that Xiaomi could potentially turn to LG for foldable displays.

Xiaomi Mi Alpha Flip: Can Xiaomi Phone Prove Successful?

Xiaomi is one of India's most famous brands, with its large product range. The budget-friendly smartphones with premium features have been getting positive user feedback. There are a couple of considerations when it comes to the foldable phone that might make or break Xiaomi's new company.

When the Galaxy Z Flip was introduced by Samsung, it was definitely exciting. However, the teardown did not succeed, and its ultra-thin glass technology has been found to be mostly plastic. If Xiaomi can win the show, they 're already on their way to success.
